Working Party on Police and Justice

The Working party on Police and Justice (WPPJ) is a specific working group mandated by the European Conference of Data Protection Authorities. It is in charge of keeping track of developments in the area of police and justice in order to deal with the increasing challenge of the protection of individuals in relation to the processing of their personal data.

One of the data protection authorities' most important tasks is to advise the legislative authorities in matters relating to data protection: they clarify the risks the legislator's initiatives imply for civil freedoms and propose alternatives that are more respectful of individuals' rights when it comes to the processing of their personal data.

In the past few years, initiatives from the third pillar (police and justice) have increasingly demanded the European data protection authorities' attention. The European Conference consequently decided to mandate a specific working group for this sector. Mr Bart De Schutter (member of the Privacy Commission) has been elected Vice-President of the group.
