Association francophone des autorités de protection des données personnelles
The French-Speaking Association of Personal Data Protection Authorities (AFAPDP) was created in 2007 and consists of 27 data protection authorities from 24 member states of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). The AFAPDP comprises the following French-speaking countries: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada (federal), Canada (New Brunswick), Canada (Quebec), Cape Verde, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Monaco, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Tunisia. The Commission for the Protection of Privacy is therefore also a member.
The AFAPDP is a young association established in Paris at the offices of the French data protection authority (the CNIL), and aims at promoting cooperation and training among French-speaking countries in the area of personal data protection. Its objective is to provide a structure for newcomer support and exchange. It also constitutes a source of expertise for countries where there is no data protection legislation in place yet.
This new body of French-speaking countries has also decided to participate in the dialogue on the implementation of privacy and personal data protection with international organizations such as the UN, the European Union or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). The AFAPDP has observer status in the activities of the Consultative Committee of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (Convention 108).
In 2008 the AFAPDP held its second annual conference in Strasbourg following the International Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners' Conference. Workshops at the conference were dedicated to sensitization and training concerning good practices, notably technical elements relating to mobility and geolocalization.
