The International Working Group on data protection in telecommunications
The International Working Group on data protection in telecommunications was created in 1983 in the context of the International Data Protection and Data Commissioners' Conference. The Berlin data protection authority provides the secretariat of this specific working group, better known as the "Berlin Group".
The Working Group consists of telecommunications experts – legal experts and technicians – from data protection authorities and other stakeholders in the telecommunications sector. One of the Working Group members invites the others to meet twice a year in Berlin. Since it was created, the Berlin Group has adopted many working papers and resolutions aimed at increasing privacy protection in telecommunications and on the Internet. These documents, even though they are not binding, inspire other data protection authorities such as the Article 29 Working Party, to the extent that they encourage the Commission for the Protection of Privacy to reflect on its daily role of privacy counsellor and guardian.
The Commission for the Protection of Privacy's secretariat actively participates in this working group's activities.
